Madsen Land Surveying is a local and family-owned company founded by John Madsen in 1979. We are a well-established firm, and we strive for quality and accuracy in our surveys. Our staff has many years of experience in the land surveying field and is dedicated to providing our clients with quality survey services. In addition to our extensive records, we have also acquired the survey records of former Martin Land Surveying, Inc., and Bell Surveying, Inc. We are licensed to practice in the states of Minnesota and Iowa. Ben Madsen is also the Martin County Surveyor and Nobles County Surveyor.
To serve the needs of our clients better, we utilize modern field and office technology and employ the latest in field procedures. In our office, we utilize the latest in site-planning and CAD (computer-aided drafting) software, including Site Comp, Trimble Business Center, and Civil 3D. In the field, we use Trimble VX robotic total stations, SX12 Total Stations, Trimble T100 tablets, Trimble R10 & R12i GPS receivers, and even Drones. These things allow us to provide high-accuracy surveys in an efficient manner, and aid us in keeping the costs of our clients down.

Madsen Land Surveying is based in Fairmont, Minnesota. Our service area covers many of the south-central and southwestern counties of Minnesota and north-central counties of Iowa.
The staff at Madsen Land Surveying is comprised of experienced professionals who are ready to help you with your land surveying needs. Below is the brief information of our key team members.
John Madsen is the founder of Madsen Land Surveying. After years of experience in the field, he obtained his degree, and in 1979 he founded the company with the simple vision of creating a land surveying company whose mission would be to provide the highest quality service possible to its clients. In addition to Minnesota, John became licensed in Iowa, South Dakota, and California during his career. John also served as the elected County Surveyor for Martin County, Minnesota from 1982 to 2014. In December of 2019, John retired, leaving the company in the hands of his long-time employee and son, Ben Madsen.
Ben Madsen is the owner and President of Madsen Land Surveying. Ben is also a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Minnesota and Iowa and has been working in the company full-time since 2000. In addition to many years of experience, he is also a graduate of the University of Wyoming's Land Surveying program, and a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the St. Cloud State University Land Surveying and Cartography bachelor's degree program, and also an FAA Certified Remote Pilot. Ben is also the elected Martin County Surveyor, a position in which he has served since 2014, and is also the Nobles County Surveyor.
Stuart Smart is the Office Manager and Senior Draftsman for Madsen Land Surveying. Stuart has been with the company since 1986. After many years of well-rounded field and office experience, Stuart now specializes in computer drafting, site planning, and survey computations and analysis. Stuart graduated in 1981 from Minnesota State University - Mankato with a bachelor's degree. He double-majored in Business Management/Industrial Relations, with a minor in Economics.

Travis Warner is also a Licensed Land Surveyor in Minnesota. Also a graduate of St. Cloud State University, Travis has many years of experience in the surveying field. He is passionate about all things surveying, detail oriented, tech savvy, and is also an FAA Part 107 Certified Remote Pilot. A veteran of construction surveying of all types, and boundary surveys large and small, Travis is ready, willing, and able to bring all of his experience to bear to ensure that our clients are getting the highest quality surveying services available.
Karl Vlieger is the lead survey tech for Madsen Land Surveying and also a draftsman. Karl started his surveying career in 1994 as a rodman working under John Madsen. In the winter of 1999, Karl moved to Arizona to attend Phoenix College studying Land Surveying and Civil Engineering. In 2004, Karl, as a single father of 3 children, continued his passion for surveying and gained well rounded experience in the office as a surveying and construction project manager. In 2010, Karl and his children, moved back to the Fairmont area where he established his personal construction company. Karl returned to Madsen Land Surveying in 2021 bringing his years of experience, professionalism and positive attitude.

Heather Madsen is key part of the office staff of Madsen Land Surveying. She has been with the company since 2015. In addition to computer drafting, Heather also handles clerical and accounting duties for the company. Heather is married to Ben and together they have two children, Ethan and Meghan.
